Material Information
Sandstone Description:
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock that is formed from sand-sized grains of mineral, rock, or organic material that have been compressed and bonded together over time. Sandstone has a rough, grainy texture that is ideal for use as a paving material. The individual grains of sand are clearly visible, giving the stone a natural and organic appearance. Sandstone can form in a variety of environments, including beaches, rivers, and deserts, and its composition can vary depending on the source of the sand. Sandstone paving is available in a range of different textures, often relying on secondary processing to achieve these finishes.
Riven sandstone has a naturally cleft, gently uneven surface texture with occasional ridges where the stone has naturally split across the natural bedding planes within the stone. The splitting process is typically done by hand, with skilled workers carefully selecting and shaping each piece of stone to create the desired size and shape. The result is a unique, natural-looking surface with a slightly rough and uneven texture. The riven surface of natural stone paving is highly desirable for its natural appearance, as it mimics the irregularities found in natural rock formations. The texture of the riven surface also provides excellent traction, making it a safe and slip-resistant choice for outdoor use.
With natural riven sandstone, the thickness of the stone is often described as either variable thickness or calibrated thickness. These are described below:
Variable Thickness Riven Sandstone This type of sandstone is usually shown with a thickness such as 15-22mm or 25-35mm and have a wider variation in thickness than a calibrated thickness stone. The underneath of the stone usually has a riven finish the same as the uppermost face (although not necessarily finished to the same standard) and the edges are usually tapered. When laying, always lay with the larger face of the slab uppermost.
When laid on a full mortar bed, any variation in thickness should be adjusted within the bedding mortar. Variable thickness stone is often more economically priced than calibrated stone. Many patio paving products with a variable thickness will be shown at a 15-22mm thickness whereas thicker paving at 25-35mm is usually suitable for use on a driveway.
Calibrated Thickness Riven Sandstone Many riven sandstone products are offered at a 'calibrated' thickness which means the paving has been cut to a less variable, relatively even depth, usually around 18mm, 22mm or 24mm, to make it easier to lay as it will be slightly quicker to level the surface of the stone. There will always be a minor tolerance on the dimensions in accordance with British Standards, even on calibrated stone. In many cases, the underside of calibrated stone will be partly corrugated, although any irregularities in this finish will not affect installation.
This paving should still be laid on a full wet mortar bed. Thinner calibrated stone such as 18mm thickness is usually more economically priced and once laid, is just as resilient as the thicker stone.
Sandstone Colours:
Sandstone is available in a wide range of colours, some subtle and some vivid. The ranges comprise of a selection of core colours combined with subtle contrasting shades, and the balance of shades can vary between batches of even the same stone due to different seams in the stone quarry occurring over time. The blend of colours may include grey, pink, khaki, maroon, buff and many more shades which when combined, create the mix of colours associated with the colour name of the paving. The colour intensity increases when the paving is wet. Most brands offer the same range of colours with slightly different names. If colour variation is not a desirable feature, then it is recommended that natural stone and especially sandstone should not be considered and an alternative with more consistent colourrs such as porcelain paving is selected instead. BE AWARE that not ALL natural stone is the same quality. Over 50% of stone sold on many other websites may not conform to British Standards and could crack during cold weather.
The main colours options with sandstone are known as the following names and include these predominant shades although other colours may also be present including grey, pink, and beige:
Buff | Harvest | Camel | Sunset Buff | Sunrise | Country Buff - has honey buff colours with occasional pink and brown-grey tones. Warm neutral tones.
Raj Green | York Green | Lakeland | Forest Glen - a mix of grey-green, beige and occasional lilac and ideal for a cool neutral colour scheme. Popular for use on older properties as well as more modern homes.
Fossil Mint | Mint | Ivory | Golden Sand - this colour range has light cream colours with warm pink and occasional brown. It may include occasionl fossil imprints and bronze markings although the general appearance is a soft cream.
Kandla Grey | Promenade | Grey - a popular choice of light dove grey with very occasional buff and fairly consistent in tone. Works well with most property styles and colours.
Autumn Brown | Brown Multi - darker shades of brown and warm grey with occasional maroon tones. Creates a warm and inviting atmosphere especially where a darker colouring is required.
Modak | Modak Rose | Heather | Buff Pink - warm rich apricot and dusky pink tones becoming rich plum and beige when wet. Ideal as a brighter option and superb for mediterranean styles.
Sagar Black | Graphite | Monsoon | Raven | Twilight - a mix of graphite and charcoal tones interspersed with warm buff tones. A classic colour that works well in older style properties. Generally more costly than other sandstone colours.
Raveena | Ravina | Rufina - this is one of the more vibrant shades of sandstone with rich purple colours combined with silver grey and buff tones. Exhibits rich colours when wet.
Indian York | Yorkshire Blend | Glendale | Old York - This sandstone has a contrasting colour palette of light dove grey and golden buff and has a banded appearance. It offers a good, economically priced alternative to British Yorkstone.
Natural Stone Characteristics:
All natural stone products are unique and will vary in colour and texture, often showing distinctive markings, minor imperfections and may include mineral deposits such as iron and quartzite. Sizes are nominal and may vary and there may be dimensional tolerances affecting size and thickness in accordance with British Standards. Some paving manufacturers include the pointing allowance in the individual slab sizes whereas others include the pointing allowance in the overall pack coverage. The product images shown are as accurate as photographic processes allow and may appear differently in accordance with lighting conditions and screen calibration in addition to the natural variation occurring between batches. Images may not be a true representation of a particular product size, use or laying pattern. Descriptions provided offer a combination of the manufacturer's and our own opinion of the product's characteristics and features.
